Is magnetism the standard for distinguishing stainless steel? People often use magnets to adsorb stainless steel handles to verify their authenticity. Non magnetic and non magnetic properties are considered good, while conversely, they are considered counterfeit goods. In fact, this is an unrealistic identification method, relying on the traditional method of determining whether a stainless steel handle has magnetism is likely to suffer.
Because the quality of stainless steel cannot be determined with the naked eye, it can generally only be tested. If chromium is added to stainless steel, it can be magnetic, but it is only a matter of permeability. Austenitic type is non magnetic or weak magnetic, while martensitic or ferritic type is magnetic.
Generally speaking, there are various types of stainless steel, which can be divided into austenite type and martensite or ferrite type according to their microstructure at room temperature. Austenitic type is non magnetic or weakly magnetic, while martensitic or ferritic type is magnetic. However, this is not necessarily the case. The austenitic 304 material commonly used as a stainless steel handle is generally non magnetic, but magnetism may also occur due to fluctuations in chemical composition or different processing conditions caused by smelting, which cannot be considered as counterfeit or unqualified. In addition, after cold processing, the microstructure of 304 stainless steel will also transform into martensite. The greater the deformation during cold processing, the more martensite transformation will occur, and the greater the magnetic properties of the steel. On the contrary, the lower quality 200 series stainless steel is likely to have no magnetism, so judging it as genuine stainless steel is a big mistake.
